Just a note that if you’re going through the REISUB sequence, you should wait a few seconds between steps. At least after E and S. Otherwise these steps are pointless. If you don’t wait a bit for them to complete, they’re basically superseded by the operations which follow. If you don’t wait for tasks to be shut down, they’ll be killed and if you don’t wait for the disk to sync, you’ll lose data anyway.
If you’re system isn’t too clogged up, on most Linux variants, you can access a virtual console by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1. This will give you a shell if you want it, but also the ability to watch the progress of any of these commands.
